Russian soldiers in North Korea: Medical aid or military exchange?
Russia has sent experienced soldiers to North Korea, officially for medical treatment. However, analysts suggest the true goal is the exchange of military experience.
The Russian ambassador to North Korea, Alexander Matsegora, reported that Moscow has sent "hundreds" of wounded soldiers to the DPRK for rehabilitation. According to him, North Korea rejected Russia's offer of financial compensation for the care of the soldiers.
The Institute for the Study of War reports that the Russian military command allegedly sent back wounded soldiers to assault groups without proper treatment. This undermines Russia’s official statements about sending soldiers abroad for medical purposes.
Military cooperation with North Korea
Analysts indicate that the presence of experienced Russian military personnel in North Korea may foster collaboration with local armed forces. The soldiers can share experiences gained during the conflict in Ukraine.
The day before, Reuters reported that North Korea is using the war in Ukraine to test its missile technology. The accuracy of North Korean ballistic missiles has significantly improved. This may be related to the exchange of experiences with Russian military personnel.
