Russia's jet fighter swap with North Korea for military aid

Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific, stated that the Russians will transfer MiG-29 and Su-27 fighter jets to North Korea in exchange for military support in Ukraine. Pyongyang can also expect the transfer of ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defence technologies.

During the Reagan National Defense Forum, Admiral Samuel Paparo spoke about the potential transfer of Russian MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters to North Korea. However, he did not specify the number of aircraft involved. The decision follows the deployment of 12,000 North Korean soldiers to Ukraine, where they are to support the Russian army. According to Paparo, the soldiers are not actively engaged in combat but are deployed within the zone.

In his opinion, North Korea likely expects even more support from Russia. Paparo mentioned technologies related to ballistic missiles, submarines, and air defence. Acquiring these would significantly strengthen Pyongyang's military position in the region. The commander of U.S. forces in the Indo-Pacific also noted that the aging MiG-29 and Su-27 are not new fifth-generation fighters, but they are still "formidable" machines. What is known about them?

The MiG-29, also known as the "Fulcrum," is one of the most well-known Soviet multi-role fighters that was introduced in the 1980s. This aircraft has two Klimov RD-33 engines, allowing a maximum speed of approximately 2,414 km/h. Its operational range is up to 1,497 km, and its operational ceiling is about 17,983 metres.

The MiG-29 is characterized by high manoeuvrability and is primarily used for air defence and support missions. It can also be used for assault operations, thanks to its ability to carry various armaments, including air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles.

The Su-27, often called the "Flanker," is another flagship Soviet-designed fighter built for air superiority and is primarily used for intercepting and engaging enemy aircraft. It is known for its excellent manoeuvrability and ability to operate at high altitudes. The Su-27 reaches a maximum speed of about 2,520 km/h and has a range exceeding 3,000 km with additional fuel tanks. Its large operational range and manoeuvrability make it ideal for long-distance defensive and offensive missions.
