Russia's new strategy: Motorcycle warfare on the Ukrainian front
The Russian army plans to introduce motorcycles into offensive operations in Ukraine, reports the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The first motorcycles are expected to appear on the front lines as early as this summer and fall.
On Saturday, the Russian Ministry of Defence released videos showing soldiers from the 299th Airborne Regiment of the 98th Airborne Division practising offensive and defensive tactics on motorcycles.
These operations are conducted in groups of two or three people at a Russian training ground. ISW notes that the Russians may be planning to integrate motorcycles into the equipment of units fighting in Ukraine.
Lieutenant Colonel Pavlo Shamshyn, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military group in Kharkiv, reported that Ukrainian intelligence observed the training of Russian soldiers in motorcycle combat.
New vehicles for the Russians. Aimed to escape drones
The spokesperson assessed that motorcycles will improve the speed and manoeuvrability of Russian troops, which is crucial in avoiding attacks from Ukrainian drones. On the other hand, he adds, the noise generated by the motorcycles may hinder the detection of approaching drones.
