Russia's push for temporary Kyiv rule rejected by US
Russia wants a "temporary administration" appointed by the UN, representatives of Russia, the USA, and other interested countries to take power in Kyiv. The United States will not agree to this condition. U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce said, "Governance in Ukraine is determined by its constitution and the Ukrainian people."
Donald Trump announced that peace talks would soon commence, which aim to end the war between Ukraine and Russia. For now, the parties cannot agree even on a complete ceasefire.
The Kremlin continues to set conditions that are unacceptable not only to the Ukrainian authorities but also to the United States. Russia wants the peace talks to be conducted by a "temporary administration." Officials of Vladimir Putin indicated that members of such a "government" would be appointed, among others, by UN bodies and interested parties.
However, the idea of removing Volodymyr Zelensky from power was criticized by representatives of Donald Trump's administration. Politicians in the USA, who are skeptical of the Ukrainian leader, openly admitted that the condition of changing power in Ukraine is unattainable.
There was an idea from Russia about a temporary administration that was not appreciated by the president. Ukraine is... a constitutional democracy. Governance in Ukraine is determined by its constitution and the Ukrainian people. We are committed to the diplomacy necessary to achieve a full ceasefire and to bring the parties to the negotiating table for a final and lasting settlement, said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce during a press conference.
Bruce simultaneously confirmed rumours that Russia is indeed trying to change the government in Ukraine without organizing general elections. However, Volodymyr Zelensky agreed to hold elections (on the condition that the war ends).
