Ryanair leaves passengers stranded amid chaotic detour
Passengers on the Ryanair flight from Santiago de Compostela to Palma de Mallorca underwent a challenging experience when their plane could not land due to strong winds. The flight was redirected to Valencia, where nearly half of the passengers opted to disembark, too shaken to continue the journey.
The incident was reported to have taken place on Saturday, December 7. After landing in Valencia, instead of resuming the flight to Palma de Mallorca, the plane unexpectedly returned to Santiago.
Ryanair showed no interest in the fate of the travellers
Passengers who chose to get off were left stranded in Valencia—frustrated and grounded. Numerous complaints quickly emerged about the lack of communication and support from Ryanair.
— We didn't get dinner, breakfast, or any information, — said Nekane Otero in an interview with "Majorca Daily Bulletin." She only reached Palma de Mallorca on Monday, two days after the planned arrival. — Ryanair didn't help us at all. It was terrible, — said another passenger, Antonio Comas.
Travelers faced costly returns
Many passengers had to bear additional and unexpected costs due to limited and expensive flight connections. Some paid up to 434 CAD more for new flights.
Others rented cars to get to Madrid and look for connections from there. Direct flights were fully booked, and alternative routes involved long layovers.
Affected passengers have already filed compensation claims against Ryanair, criticizing how the airline handled the situation and the lack of any assistance.
