Scented solutions: Crafting natural aromas for healthy homes

Smell plays a crucial role in our lives, influencing our overall well-being. To avoid unpleasant odours at home, we often reach for candles, incense, or air fresheners that fill the space with a delightful aroma. The problem, however, is that these products often contain artificial ingredients.

Aromatherapy is a branch of alternative medicine based on the belief that scents can improve health and well-being. Its roots date back to ancient times. Scientists have noticed and discovered that aromatherapy holds significant therapeutic potential.

This method uses natural scents, primarily essential oils and distillates. Each smell can affect us differently—some energize, while others relax. It's worth exploring aromatherapy and incorporating it into your home. The simplest way is to create a homemade air freshener to introduce a natural, beautiful fragrance to your living space. We explain how to prepare it.

How to prepare a homemade air freshener?

Essential oils are derived from fresh or dried parts of plants. That's why their scents are natural and pleasant. They cost about $2.50 per bottle, depending on the plant they are made from. Lavender oils are among the more affordable options, while the most expensive is made from Damask rose petals—5 ml of this oil costs as much as $450.

Dreaming of a natural, beautiful scent at home? Choose a quality essential oil or craft your homemade air freshener, which is relatively cost-effective. You only need two ingredients: lemon peels and a sandwich bag. Grate the peels on a fine grater and place them in the bag. The more peels you add, the more intense the scent will be. Seal the bag and position it on a radiator. Your room will be infused with a pleasant citrus aroma within a few minutes.

Eco-friendly odour neutralizer

The bathroom often harbours unpleasant smells. The source is bacteria accumulating on tiles, towels, or fixtures. How can you eliminate it? After cleaning, it's beneficial to use a homemade odour neutralizer.

You'll need a spray bottle, two tablespoons of water, three tablespoons of fabric softener, and one tablespoon of baking soda. Combine all the ingredients in the bottle and mix them. You can use this spray immediately. Baking soda effectively absorbs unpleasant odours, and the fabric softener will impart a pleasant fragrance to the room.
