Sikorski backs Meloni in tariff talks with Trump

Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said on Thursday that he "supports" Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and hopes that she will succeed in convincing U.S. President Donald Trump on both lifting tariffs and the issue of Ukraine. He assessed that Meloni takes a "responsible and ethical stance" towards it.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday. She will visit him as the first leader of an EU country since he announced tariffs on products from the Union. These tariffs were later suspended for 90 days.

The Italian Prime Minister, like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, opposes the introduction of tariffs by the United States and considers them harmful to economies on both sides of the Atlantic.

Similar to Brussels, Rome hopes that Washington will favorably respond to the European Commission's proposal for mutual zero tariff rates on industrial products.

Sikorski supports

On Thursday in Wrocław, journalists asked the Polish Foreign Minister, who is participating in the East x West Forum conference there, for a comment on this visit.

Of course, we support Prime Minister Meloni. She takes a responsible and ethical stance regarding Russian aggression against Ukraine. Also, on this matter, and on the matter of tariffs, I hope she convinces President Trump, said Sikorski.

The government in Rome hopes for a USA-EU conflict resolution in the form of zero tariffs. However, observers warn that the latest statements by the U.S. President do not indicate that he is inclined to accept that.
