Sip on health: Why hot chocolate is more than a sweet treat
It's associated with dessert because it's often served with whipped cream and other sweet toppings. However, in its basic form, hot chocolate offers quite a few health benefits. Find out why it's worth sipping from time to time.
Hot chocolate? Many of us think of it as a dessert. However, when prepared correctly, it provides the body with valuable nutrients. Among them, the most important is magnesium, which positively affects the proper functioning of the nervous system. This element helps reduce stress, improves concentration, and strengthens muscles. But there's more to hot chocolate than just that.
What does hot chocolate contain?
This drink is also rich in antioxidants, containing more than green tea or red wine. Antioxidants help fight free radicals and improve skin condition. During heating, additional substances are released that aid in fighting the aging processes of cells and reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases. Hot chocolate also contains polyphenols, which positively affect blood pressure regulation, supporting heart function and reducing the risk of stroke.
hot chocolate improves mood and memory
Thanks to its theobromine content, this drink has a stimulating effect, but it's much milder than coffee. Drinking hot chocolate is also good for the brain. It contributes to improved mood and memory because the ingredients in hot chocolate stimulate the production of endorphins and serotonin. However, to gain these health properties, it needs to be prepared properly.
How to prepare hot chocolate?
When preparing hot chocolate, it's important to choose products with high cocoa content (at least 70%). Ready-made mixes with lots of sugar and chemical additives are not ideal. The best solution is a drink based on natural cocoa.
Is chocolate without additives too bitter and tart for you? Use natural sweeteners like honey or maple syrup. You can also opt for the addition of milk or a plant-based drink, such as almond or oat milk. Two cups (about 500 mL) a day is the optimal amount, allowing you to enjoy the health benefits without risking excessive calorie or simple sugar intake.
