Strawberries require special attention right after purchase. They are soft and prone to damage, which causes them to lose freshness quickly. Proper storage involves following a few simple rules. Avoid moisture and bruising the fruit, and also be mindful of their freshness when purchasing. Sadly, improper selection of strawberries can be a mistake made right at the time of buying these seasonal delights.

Common mistakes when buying strawberries

When buying strawberries, ensure their freshness and firmness. Avoid transferring them to single-use plastic bags, as this can lead to bruising. It's advisable to buy strawberries in smaller quantities to prevent wastage. If possible, take them home in a punnet (often at an extra cost, but a friendly vendor may allow you to return it for your next purchase in exchange for a one-time fee). If you don't eat them immediately upon returning home, it's better not to store them in the fridge with the punnet.

How to extend the freshness of strawberries?

If you want to keep strawberries fresh for longer, store them flat in a dish lined with paper towels. The towel will absorb excess moisture, helping to preserve the fruits in better condition. Remember to sort through the strawberries and remove any bruised ones. To maintain longer freshness, it's best not to wash the strawberries immediately and to leave the stems intact. You can also freeze strawberries whole or blend them and freeze them as well.
