The Philippine patrol was sailing towards Scarborough Shoal. According to the Philippine coast guard, at a certain point, a Chinese ship approached them and fired powerful water cannons.

The Chinese coast guard argues that the Filipinos ignored "warnings" and then deliberately hit their ship. Beijing is urging Manila to "stop infringement activities and provocations."

Both countries claim rights to the shoal. It was taken over by China, making it difficult for Filipino fishermen to access it. Incidents involving the coast guards of both countries occur regularly.
