Tom Cruise gears up for 'Top Gun' sequel after mission launch
Tom Cruise hasn't yet released the latest installment of "Mission: Impossible" in theatres, and he's already being asked about the next "Top Gun" film. Let's recall that "Top Gun: Maverick" became the biggest hit of his career.
"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" has already had a gala premiere in Cannes and in three Asian countries, but the true test will come this coming weekend. That's when we'll find out if "The Final Reckoning" has a chance to become the first film in the "Mission: Impossible" series to earn a billion dollars in theatres. However, there is no doubt that the biggest hit of Tom Cruise’s career will remain "Top Gun: Maverick" from 2022, with earnings reaching $1.5 billion.
In interviews related to the farewell part of "Mission: Impossible," journalists often ask Cruise about the future of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. The actor doesn't provide definitive answers, but one can infer from his comments that the project is on the right track.
In a conversation with the "Today Show Australia," the star admitted that "work is underway." "There’s numerous other films that we’re actively working on right now. I’m always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, and we’ll be coming out with that. That was an extraordinary experience," Cruise said.
"We’re thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what’s possible. It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick, so all of these things we’re working on, we’re discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick," continued the actor.
It's been known for a while that Tom Cruise wants to film scenes for one of his movies in outer space. The star is involved in the creation of a film studio called SEE-1, which is set to dock with the first commercial space station, Axiom Station. The third part of "Top Gun" seems to be the perfect project for this.
