Tragic bus accidents highlight Mexico's road safety crisis
In Mexico, there have been two tragic bus accidents resulting in the deaths of 32 people, with dozens injured. The accidents occurred in the states of Durango and Oaxaca.
Two serious bus accidents occurred in Mexico last Monday, claiming the lives of 32 people. Local authorities reported that in the state of Durango in the north of the country, a bus collided with a lorry, resulting in the deaths of 14 people. The vehicle had arrived from McAllen, Texas, where many Mexicans work. About 10 people were injured in the collision. The causes of the accident have not yet been disclosed to the public.
Earlier that same day, in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, a bus overturned on the highway, causing the deaths of 18 people. The state governor, Salomon Jara Cruz, reported this on the platform X. Initially, the number of victims was estimated at 11, with about 30 injured. State authorities have announced an investigation to determine the causes of this tragedy.
According to media reports, the bus passengers were supporters of the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena) returning from President Claudia Sheinbaum's rally in Mexico City.
Frequent accidents on Mexican roads
According to the AFP agency, road accidents are common in Mexico. Experts primarily attribute this situation to two factors: speeding and the very poor condition of many roads.
It is estimated that at least 15,000 people die in road accidents in Mexico every year.
