Submarine accident in Egypt: video recording

The accident involving the Sindbad submarine, owned by the hotel of the same name, took place just 1 kilometre from the shore. The cause of the tragedy is still unknown. Local authorities and the Embassy of the Russian Federation confirmed that all the victims were Russians. The AFP agency reported that 19 people were injured, whereas local services mention nine injuries.

NEXTA published a recording on the X channel, supposedly from the Sindbad submarine. The voices of panicked tourists are heard as the submarine begins rapidly filling with water upon boarding. People fall into the water before the recording abruptly ends.

It is unclear if the recording is from the day of the tragedy or from another incident involving this submarine. Previously, there were unconfirmed reports suggesting the submarine might have hit a reef at a depth of 20 metres and lost pressure.

Previous incidents in Hurghada

This is not the first such accident in Hurghada. In November of last year, the tourist boat Sea Story sank, resulting in the deaths or disappearances of 11 people. The BBC reported that in February of this year, there were 16 incidents involving small boats in the Hurghada area.
