Trump applauds Bezos as Amazon drops tariff display plan
Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had a "good call" with Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and is pleased that the billionaire resolved the issue regarding plans to display the costs imposed by the president's tariffs alongside product prices on Amazon. Previously, the White House had condemned the company's actions as a "hostile and political act."
"Jeff Bezos was very nice. He was terrific. He solved the problem quickly. He did the right thing, and he's a good guy," said Donald Trump to reporters before departing for a rally in Michigan. The president commented on reports that Amazon had abandoned plans to display the tariff costs alongside the prices of products sold on the platform. Trump confirmed that he had a "good call" with Bezos on this topic on Tuesday.
Bezos canceled plans to display tariff costs on Amazon
On Tuesday morning, Punchbowl News reported that the e-commerce giant was planning to introduce changes that would show what portion of product prices were made up of the tariffs introduced by Trump. When asked about this, a White House spokeswoman condemned these plans as a "hostile and political act."
A few hours later, the company announced that it did not intend to implement this plan as it was merely a proposal considered by the Amazon Haul team, the Amazon e-store offering the cheapest goods under $20 CAD.
Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos—who stepped down from the director position but retained the role of "executive chairman" of the company—had previously been criticized by Trump, among other things, for the activities of "The Washington Post," which is owned by the billionaire.
During the election campaign, Bezos took steps to get closer to Trump, influencing the newspaper's editorial line and, among other things, donating to the president's inaugural committee. The former richest man in the world was also one of the honoured guests at Trump's inauguration.
