Trump declares new victory holidays, Medvedev calls it nonsense
Donald Trump announced new holidays on May 8 and November 11, claiming the USA made a crucial contribution to the victory in World War II. Dmitry Medvedev criticized these comments as "pretentious nonsense."
President Donald Trump, in his post on the social media platform Truth Social, emphasized the role of the United States in both world wars: "We did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II" Trump stated.
In connection with this, he announced new holidays: May 8 as Victory Day in World War II and November 11 as Victory Day in World War I.
"We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!" he added.
Medvedev criticizes Trump
Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and current deputy chairman of the Security Council, criticized Trump's words. In a post on the social media platform VK, he described them as "pretentious nonsense." "Trump recently stated that the United States made the greatest contribution to the victory in World War II and that he will introduce a special holiday on May 8. The holiday is not a bad thing, but his first statement is pretentious nonsense," Medvedev wrote.
"Our people sacrificed 27 million lives of their sons and daughters in the name of destroying damned fascism. That is why Victory Day is ours, and it is on May 9th! That is how it was, that is how it is, and that is how it will always be!" he added.
