Trump eyes "soon" ceasefire in Ukraine after talks with Putin
During a meeting on Friday with journalists, Donald Trump discussed the war in Ukraine. The U.S. President stated that a comprehensive ceasefire will be implemented "soon." Earlier, Trump had agreed with Putin on a 30-day halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.
Trump made his announcement in the Oval Office in the presence of the head of the Pentagon, Pete Hegseth.
Trump stated that a ceasefire would be established in multiple regions and remarked that the negotiations have been proceeding positively so far despite the complexity of the situation.
The President also mentioned that enemy forces currently surround some soldiers. He expressed confidence that a complete ceasefire will be achieved "soon."
He reiterated his expectation of a full ceasefire in the near future, noting that both sides currently have significant firepower aimed at one another and, regrettably, some troops have already been encircled by opposing forces.
He said that discussions toward a final agreement are ongoing, mentioning that a formal deal—covering matters such as territorial division—is currently under negotiation. According to him, these talks are actively taking place at this very moment.
Trump recalled that he had recently spoken with Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelensky on the phone. He said that, following these discussions, a preliminary framework for an agreement is already in place, though he chose not to disclose any specifics.
Will there be a breakthrough? Trump spoke on Ukraine
In a White House statement following Tuesday’s conversation between Trump and Putin, it was mentioned that the leaders agreed on a 30-day ceasefire concerning attacks on infrastructure and energy installations.
The communiqué mentions that the politicians discussed the ceasefire and peace in Ukraine. "Both leaders agreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace. They also stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia," it was conveyed.
"This conflict should never have started and should have been ended long ago with sincere and good faith peace efforts," reads the statement.
It was noted that Trump and Putin agreed that "the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East".
