Trump intervenes as Rubio and Musk clash over federal cuts

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Elon Musk clashed during Thursday's cabinet meeting of Donald Trump. As the New York Times described, Rubio was furious with Musk, who accused him of failing to reduce staff in federal agencies. President Trump observed the situation passively for a prolonged period before intervening.

The heated exchange concerned staff reductions in government agencies, which Musk supports. The President convened the meeting following a series of decisions on mass layoffs, which faced criticism. Musk, heading the Department of State Efficiency, argued that federal agencies make decisions on layoffs.

Rubio strongly reacted to Musk's accusations, dismissing them as untrue. He also questioned the fate of over 1,500 State Department officials who had taken early retirement with severance. In response, Musk countered by suggesting that while Rubio performs well on television, his other abilities are lacking.

President Trump finally intervened, defending Rubio. Trump noted that he has a packed schedule, frequently traveling, making television appearances, and overseeing an agency. Therefore, he emphasized the importance of everyone working together. He emphasized that Musk can advise on employment reductions but not make decisions.
