Trump pushes for Greenland acquisition, citing security needs
"We need Greenland for international safety and security. We need it. We have to have it," said President Donald Trump of the United States on Wednesday.
President Trump expressed the view that Greenland is crucial to the national and international security of the United States. During a ceremony announcing tariffs on foreign cars, he stated that Denmark should allow the USA to take control of the island.
We need Greenland, and the world needs us to have Greenland, including Denmark. Denmark must allow us to take over Greenland. We'll see what happens, said Donald Trump.
Why is Greenland so important?
Trump emphasized that the presence of the USA in Greenland is essential in light of the activity of ships from China and Russia in the region.

If we are not there, we can have neither national nor international security he added.
These statements were made in the context of the planned visit by Vice President J.D. Vance to the island, who is to assess the security situation.
Vance's visit, scheduled for Friday, includes a visit to the space forces base. In an earlier Wednesday interview with conservative columnist Vince Cogliano, Trump stated that Vance's mission will be to convey to the Greenlanders that America "needs the island" and "has to have it".
The visit of a broader delegation, which aimed to tour heritage sites, was canceled due to opposition from local and Danish authorities.
