Trump vows to fight court's tariff ruling with Supreme Court appeal

Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision of the U.S. Court of International Trade, which ruled that the President of the United States overstepped his authority by imposing additional tariffs on many countries. Trump hopes that the Supreme Court will overturn this decision, emphasizing that it is "wrong" and "political."

What do you need to know?

  • The federal appeals court upheld the tariffs introduced by Donald Trump, which had been blocked the day before by the U.S. Court of International Trade.
  • The appeals court ordered both sides to submit written arguments by early June.

Trump commented on Truth Social that the ruling of the U.S. Court of International Trade is "incredible" and works against the United States, concerning "desperately needed tariffs."

The U.S. President emphasized that the court's decision is "wrong and political" and expressed hope that the Supreme Court will quickly and decisively overturn it. According to Trump, this decision would require congressional approval to implement tariffs, which could lead to prolonged debates in Washington, potentially weakening presidential power.

Did Trump have the right to impose tariffs?

The U.S. Court of International Trade in New York ruled that Trump overstepped his authority because the power to impose tariffs belongs solely to Congress. As a result, the court invalidated Trump's orders regarding tariffs that he introduced from the beginning of his presidency.

However, on Thursday, the appeals court temporarily upheld the tariffs imposed by Trump, without addressing the merits of the case, and ordered both sides to submit written arguments by early June.

"The U.S. Court of International Trade incredibly ruled against the United States of America on desperately needed Tariffs but, fortunately, the full 11 Judge Panel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit Court has just stayed the order by the Manhattan-based Court of International Trade," reads Donald Trump's post.

Joint conference with Musk

Trump also announced on Truth Social that on Friday, he will hold a joint press conference with Elon Musk, who is leaving the U.S. administration. The conference is scheduled to take place at 1:30 p.m. ET in the Oval Office of the White House.

Trump wrote that even though Musk is leaving, "he will, always, be with us, helping all the way. Elon is terrific." Musk announced on platform X that he is resigning as Trump's chief advisor and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

The Associated Press noted that Musk's decision ends a tumultuous period during which many dismissals and restructurings of government agencies occurred. Despite Musk's numerous efforts, their effects were less than expected.
