Many pieces of information provided by Russian media or government representatives are elements of propaganda. Such reports are part of the information warfare conducted by the Russian Federation.

What you need to know

  • In an interview with CBS, Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Donald Trump is the only one who sees the need to address the fundamental causes of the war in Ukraine.
  • Lavrov noted that discussions with the USA are progressing towards an agreement, but the details still need to be refined.
  • Russia stubbornly claims that its attacks in Ukraine are solely aimed at military targets, despite criticism from Trump.

In an interview with CBS (the full interview will be published on Sunday - ed. note), Sergey Lavrov emphasized that Trump recognizes the need to address the fundamental causes of the conflict in Ukraine. According to Lavrov, Trump is likely the only leader on Earth who has recognized the need to address the core issues of the Russian invasion.

According to Lavrov, one of the key mistakes was "drawing Ukraine into NATO," something he attributes as a fault of the Biden administration. Lavrov noted that Trump wants to correct these mistakes, which he views as crucial for reaching an agreement.

Are talks with the USA heading towards an agreement?

Lavrov referred to President Trump's statement on Wednesday about "having an agreement with Russia."

- Well, the President of the United States believes — and I think rightly so — that we are moving in the right direction. The statement by the (US) president (Donald Trump) mentions a deal, and we are ready to reach a deal, but there are still some specific points -- elements of this deal which need to be fine-tuned - Lavrov said, adding that he cannot disclose the details involved. However, he mentioned that he is "busy with this exact process."

It is known, however, that it involves handing over Crimea to Russia, a proposal that Zelensky has already rejected.

How does Russia justify its actions in Ukraine?

In response to Trump's criticism regarding the bombing of Kyiv, Lavrov insisted that Russia is only targeting military objectives. Even though Trump described these actions as "unnecessary," Lavrov continued to claim that Russia has the right to strike objects being used by the Ukrainian military.
