Turkish forces strike Kurdish YPG weaponry in Syrian offensive
Turkish special forces destroyed 12 weapon trucks and two tanks belonging to the Kurdish YPG militia in northeastern Syria.
Turkish special forces conducted an operation in northeastern Syria aimed at dismantling the weaponry seized by the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) militia.
As a result of the operation, 12 trucks loaded with missiles and heavy weapons, as well as two tanks and ammunition, were destroyed, according to the Turkish special forces.
Turkey fights Kurds
According to the Turkish side, the destroyed weapons previously belonged to the armed forces of the ousted Syrian leader, Bashar al-Assad. The weapons were left behind by his troops when they vacated the Al-Qamishli area in northeastern Syria. The Kurdish YPG militia seized these resources, prompting the intervention by the Turkish special forces.
Turkey considers the People's Protection Units (YPG) to be a branch of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara recognizes as a terrorist organization. The actions of the Turkish special forces aim to limit the influence of the YPG in the region, which is part of a broader strategy to combat the PKK.
