These are somewhere between croutons and chips. Similar products are available in stores, but homemade bread chips taste so much better. They're spicy, slightly garlicky, and so delicious that the bowl empties quickly. This budget-friendly snack is sure to be a hit at parties.

Bread chips

There are countless ways to use stale bread, so throwing it away would be a shame. Instead of making casseroles or grinding it into breadcrumbs, try making delicious chips with spices. In my home, they're more popular than popcorn and crackers. They're the perfect addition to soups and salads, as well as a standalone snack for an evening movie session.

These snacks are significantly cheaper than store-bought ones, and you can adjust the amount of spices to suit your taste. Less garlic if you've got a date coming up, or more hot paprika if you enjoy the heat? No problem, it's all up to you.

Ingredients:

  • 200 grams French bread baguette (about 2 pieces),
  • half an onion,
  • 3 cloves of garlic,
  • sweet and hot paprika to taste,
  • dried tomatoes as a spice or pizza seasoning,
  • dried basil,
  • 125 millilitres vegetable oil (half a cup),
  • half a teaspoon of salt.

Preparation method:

  1. Peel the onion and garlic, cut them into smaller pieces, and blend into a smooth paste with the oil or olive oil.
  2. Add spices to taste and mix.
  3. Slice the baguette into thin slices about 3 millimetres thick.
  4. Spread the bread with the prepared mixture on both sides.
  5. Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Arrange the chips in a single layer; do not stack them on top of each other.
  6. Place in an oven preheated to 160 degrees Celsius (320 degrees Fahrenheit) for approximately 5 minutes.
  7. After that time, flip them and return them to the oven for a few minutes, until they brown on the other side.

Remove the finished chips from the oven and let them cool to room temperature. You can serve them as a standalone snack; they taste great with a garlicky sauce. They also work well as an addition to hummus, as a substitute for croutons in a salad, or to enhance the taste of tomato soup. Enjoy!
