Ukraine downs Russian Albatros drone in a landmark defence feat
The Ukrainian armed forces have shot down a Russian Albatros M5 drone for the first time, reports the Ukrainian portal Defence Express. The Russians use this drone for aerial reconnaissance.
The Ukrainian army successfully shot down the rare Russian reconnaissance drone Albatros M5 on April 2. The 63rd Independent Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shared a video of the incident on Facebook. This is the first confirmed case of shooting down this type of unmanned aerial vehicle.
Russian Albatros M5 drone
Unlike the popular Shahed drones in Russia, the Albatros M5 is an advanced technological reconnaissance drone. It serves the Russian army by conducting aerial observations, tracking enemy movements, and transmitting collected information to allied units. This allows allied units to direct attacks on designated areas.
The Albatros M5 is equipped with vision systems developed with the involvement of the Russian company Kaspersky. According to CyberResistance and InformNapalm portals, Kaspersky provided software that enables the automatic detection, selection, and tracking of targets. The drone uses a neural network to identify people in real-time and has night vision capabilities.
Despite its advanced features, the Albatros M5 drone was shot down by Ukrainian air defence units. The 63rd Brigade emphasized that no technology can protect Russian drones from the decisive actions of Ukrainian defenders.
According to a video published on social media, the Ukrainian brigade eliminated the Russian unmanned aerial vehicle using a drone. This is a commonly used practice at the front, primarily because drones are less expensive than missiles for shooting down air threats.
