Ukraine proposes ceasefire, threatens Russia with sanctions

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that together with the countries forming the "coalition of the willing," he proposed to Russia a demand for a full and unconditional cessation of hostilities starting Monday, May 12. If Moscow refuses, severe sanctions will be applied, targeting the Russian energy and banking sectors.

During a Saturday conference following a meeting with European leaders, Zelensky emphasized the significance of this initiative. The Ukrainian president called the event a "very important signal" from the leaders of France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland. He stated, after talks with President Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Donald Tusk that it is a sign of true European unity with Ukraine. Unity that aims to bring closer a real peace and ensure long-term security.

The proposed ceasefire would last for a minimum of 30 days and cover all spheres of warfare—in the air, at sea, and on land. Zelensky noted that the initiative also has the support of the United States, highlighting its international character and importance.

Consequences for Russia in case of refusal

The President of Ukraine clearly outlined how a potential rejection of the proposal by the Russian side will be interpreted. According to Zelensky, attempts by Russia to set its own conditions or a complete refusal to accept the truce will be a clear indication that the Kremlin does not want peace and intends to continue the war. Such a stance by Moscow would trigger a sanctions mechanism targeted at key sectors of the Russian economy.

The Ukrainian leader declared that if Russia refuses a full halt of fighting, sanctions should be applied against it, with intensified measures against its energy sector and banking system. This proposal serves as an attempt to exert pressure on Russia by combining a diplomatic peace initiative with the threat of serious economic consequences should it be rejected.
