The Ukrainian Bars missile is a novel and mysterious weapon unveiled by Minister Herman Smetanin on April 11. Although the technical specifics remain undisclosed, it is known to be the creation of private manufacturers, not state-owned entities. The missile is classified as a "missile-drone," which implies it merges characteristics of both a missile and a drone. The BBC has obtained details about this secretive weapon's specifications.

New capabilities for Ukrainian defense

Bars has a range of about 700 to 800 kilometres (435 to 500 miles), positioning it as a medium-range weapon. Its primary advantage is the potential for mass production in Ukraine, enabling regular strikes on targets deep inside Russia. This modern solution may present a challenge to missile defence systems.

The BBC reminds us that by 2024, Ukraine significantly boosted missile production by introducing new models like "Pekło," "Palianycia," and "Ruta." Each has distinct features, but "Bars" is notable for its mass-producibility and its extensive range. This could considerably impact Ukraine's defensive capabilities.

As we have learned, Bars is categorized as a weapon between a traditional cruise missile and a drone. According to BBC findings, the new weapon has a warhead weighing 50 to 100 kilograms (110 to 220 pounds) and is powered by a compact turbojet engine. This allows it to reach its target swiftly and poses a challenge to enemy air defences. Bars can be launched from both ground platforms and aircraft.

Development of the Ukrainian defense industry

The BBC also notes that in August 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered additional funding for missile development. Consequently, Ukraine is working on several projects to augment the country's defensive and offensive capabilities, including the modernization of the Neptune missile and new models that can be used for attacks and reconnaissance.
