Ukrainian envoy warns peace talks with Putin may backfire
Vasyl Bodnar, the Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, warns against the consequences of talks with Vladimir Putin, which could worsen the chances of achieving peace in the future.
The Ukrainian ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, expressed his concern about the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the Lower Silesian Forum for the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Wrocław, Bodnar emphasized that such talks could only worsen future peace prospects.
Bodnar referenced recent phone conversations between former U.S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The ambassador noted that while the American side is striving for peace, Putin's demands, such as disarming Ukraine and halting arms supplies, are unacceptable.
On the one hand, it is good that the American side is moving towards seeking peace, and we support concrete actions here, but on the other hand, we see that Putin demands Ukraine disarm, stop receiving weapons, and that its intelligence be dismantled - said Bodnar.
Attack on Kyiv as a response
The ambassador emphasized that Russia's response to "Trump's peace proposals" was an attack on Kyiv using 60 drones. - An attack with 60 drones, and this is evidence that Russia wants peace? Declarations are one thing, but reality looks different — added Bodnar.
According to Bodnar, Ukraine is ready for talks with the U.S. to find a platform for peaceful solutions. - On our side, there is complete readiness to conduct talks with the American side to continue seeking a platform for peaceful solutions — emphasized the Ukrainian diplomat. The ambassador noted that currently, there is no basis to consider an agreement with Russia.
However, with Russia, the aggressor, there is currently no basis to think that an agreement is possible in the near term — stated Bodnar.
Trump and Putin's talks included discussions about a 30-day ceasefire concerning energy and infrastructure facilities. The White House announced that negotiations on this matter are to begin immediately in the Middle East. The Kremlin, in turn, highlighted that ending foreign military aid to Ukraine is a key condition for a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
