General Mychajlo Drapatyj, commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, announced his resignation following a missile attack on training ground 239, which resulted in the deaths of 12 soldiers and over 60 injuries. The Russians carried out this shelling on Sunday morning.
Drapatyj emphasized that his decision stems from a sense of responsibility for the tragedy.
"This is my responsibility. I didn't fulfill, I didn't convince, I didn't change the approach to the person in rank," wrote Drapatyj on Facebook.
What are the consequences of the tragedy at the training ground?
Drapatyj noted that he failed to eliminate the phenomenon of impunity in the army, which he considers a "poison" for the military.
"An army in which commanders bear personal responsibility for the lives of people can be considered alive. An army, where no one is held accountable for losses, awaits internal collapse," added Drapatyj.
After the tragedy, Drapatyj initiated an investigation into the actions of commanders, the state of shelters, and the effectiveness of warning systems.
"We will not win this war if we do not build an army where honour is not just a word, but an action," emphasized Drapatyj, assuring that all affected are receiving necessary assistance.
A commission will examine the attack and its consequences
The Ground Forces Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has established a commission to examine the circumstances and reasons behind recent personnel losses. The investigation will assess whether any deaths or injuries among soldiers resulted from the actions or negligence of officials, and if so, those individuals will face consequences. Meanwhile, efforts are underway to enhance protective measures for troops against ongoing missile and air strikes by the enemy.
