Unsecured gun tragedy claims young mother's life in California
A shocking story unfolded in a house in California. A two-year-old boy reached for an unsecured gun and pulled the trigger. A shot was fired, and the bullet hit his 22-year-old mother. The woman later died in the hospital.
At the time of the tragedy, besides the two-year-old boy and his mother, Jessinya Mina, the boy's 18-month-old sister, and the woman's partner, Andrew Sanchez, were also in the house. He was the owner of the gun and had left the unsecured weapon on the table in the bedroom.
When Sanchez heard the gunshot and realized what had happened, he immediately called for help. The injured woman was taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite the doctors' efforts, she did not survive.
The woman's partner was detained and charged with endangering the child and improper storage of the weapon. He was released after posting bail.
Jessinya Mina's children were placed in the care of her parents. Sanchez is not their father.
288 such cases this year
"Due to her boyfriend's carelessness, arrogance, irresponsibility, and ignoring her requests to never keep a weapon in the house, she is gone forever," stated the woman's sister. "My niece and nephew will have to live with memories and stories about their mother," she added.
CBC News reminds us that this is yet another tragedy of its kind. Earlier this month, a 7-year-old boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother dead after finding a gun in a truck's compartment.
According to the non-profit organization Everytown for Gun Safety, over the past year, there have been at least 288 cases of unintended gun use by children in the USA. As a result, over 100 people have died, and about 200 were injured.
