USA dispatches new CAD 711M arms package to bolster ukraine
The White House announced a new weapons package for Ukraine on Thursday. The package includes additional ammunition for air defence systems, drones, and armoured vehicles. The outgoing administration of President Joe Biden is preparing additional packages and intends to continue supplying equipment to Ukraine until the end of its term.
Details about the new support package for the Ukrainian army were shared by National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby during Thursday's press briefing. Among the elements of the new batch of armaments, he mentioned missile projectiles for air defence systems, artillery ammunition, drones, and armoured vehicles.
Although the value of the equipment was not disclosed, earlier reports mentioned CAD 711 million.
- The United States is providing another significant package of urgently needed weapons and equipment to our Ukrainian partners as they defend against Russia's ongoing attacks - informed U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
In a statement by the State Department, it was noted that the new deliveries, in addition to ammunition, anti-tank weapons, and counter-drone systems, also include the transfer of equipment for protection against biological, chemical, and nuclear threats.
Already CAD 90 billion in aid
The package announced on Thursday is already the 72nd tranche of arms delivered to Ukraine from American resources. The total value of the weapons delivered and promised is over CAD 90 billion.
As Kirby announced during Thursday's briefing, the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden is preparing additional packages and intends to continue supplying equipment to Ukraine until the end of its term.
However, it is not certain whether it will be able to fulfil the promise of using all available funds before the change in administration. It still has nearly CAD 9.6 available for this purpose.
