Using Russian funds: Ukraine's strategy for reconstruction
The authorities in Kyiv are exploring ways to secure resources for the country's reconstruction. One option under consideration is to use Russian funds for this purpose. Ukraine plans to impose special tariffs on the import of Russian goods after the war.
The revenue from these tariffs on Russian imports would be allocated to Ukraine's reconstruction fund. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal explained that the initiative would serve as an economic tool for securing reparations, enabling action without the need to wait for political shifts within Russia.
The current authorities in the Kremlin consistently reject the possibility of paying any compensation to Ukraine for the losses sustained during the war.
Ukraine aims to seize Russian money as a form of reparation
Moreover, Ukraine continues to pursue the complete confiscation of frozen Russian assets as reparations.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine announced that the country has already seized $50 billion ($69 billion CAD) from frozen Russian assets. These funds, he added, are being used for budgetary requirements, military spending, and the repair of damaged infrastructure. Ukraine's goal is the full confiscation of these funds.
