Verbena: A fragrant and vibrant alternative to geraniums

Verbena is a plant that blooms profusely all summer long, thriving in full sun without any fear. Ideal for balconies and gardens, it captivates with its fragrance and ease of cultivation. Moreover, its scent is quite strong. Could it be a viable alternative to the queen of balconies, the geranium?

A balcony is an ideal place for cultivating a variety of plants that offer both aesthetic and practical benefits. Balcony flowers like geraniums, petunias, and surfinas are popular due to their long and abundant blooms. However, it's worth considering other, lesser-known but equally beautiful plants. One of these is verbena.

Instead of buying a geranium, choose verbena

Verbena is a fantastic alternative to geraniums, offering surprising durability and beauty. It blooms throughout the summer, and its fragrance becomes especially intense in the evenings. It thrives both in the garden and on the balcony. Although often considered an annual, some varieties can endure a mild winter.

Verbena loves sunlight, and the more it receives, the better it blooms. It grows best in southern or western exposures. The soil should be light and well-drained; adding sand or perlite can improve its quality. The plant doesn't tolerate standing water, so make sure pots have drainage holes.

Watering verbena should be adapted to the weather, keeping the soil slightly moist. During hot weather, it's best to water either in the morning or evening. Fortnightly fertilization with plant food for flowering plants is recommended. Regular pruning and the removal of faded blooms will stimulate further growth.

Not just flowers

For those keen on greenery, balcony trees can be a wonderful choice. The jade plant, also known as the money tree, and boxwood are plants that are not only decorative but also easy to care for. Miniature fruit trees, such as citrus or columnar apple trees, can produce delicious fruit and add extra colour to your balcony.

Vegetables and fruits are a good option for those who wish to enjoy homegrown produce. Tomatoes, chili peppers, and berries like strawberries or blueberries are well-suited for pot cultivation. Ensuring the right conditions, including ample sunlight and regular watering, will enable the plants to flourish and produce fruit.
