Winter storm leaves trail of death and darkness across U.S.
A tragic toll of the winter storm in the USA. According to the BBC, at least four people have died due to severe weather conditions, and hundreds of thousands of residents are without power. Dangerous weather conditions have also led to flight cancellations and the closure of some airports.
According to the BBC, two people died in a car accident due to poor weather conditions, and a storm in the state of Missouri killed one person. In Texas, the body of a man who froze at a bus stop was found. Authorities caution that the death toll may rise.
PowerOutage reports that over 265,000 customers in five states in the USA are currently without power. The majority of those affected are in Virginia, with nearly 78,000 people lacking electricity access. It is unclear whether all power outages are directly related to the storm.
Canceled flights and warnings
Because of the snowstorm, over 1,800 flights across the United States have been canceled. Washington's Ronald Reagan Airport was closed due to weather threats.
The Mount Washington Avalanche Center in New Hampshire warns that wind, which often reaches extreme speeds in this area, may prove more dangerous than the snow.
