Balconies in apartment buildings can become a green haven for plant lovers. Choosing the right species that are resistant to changing weather conditions allows you to enjoy greenery all year round. For shaded balconies, where the sun doesn't reach too often, one is particularly recommended - English ivy.

Year-round plants for the balcony

English ivy, as an evergreen climber, is resistant to various weather conditions. Before winter, it's worth protecting its roots with Styrofoam or bubble wrap. Another option is common periwinkle, which keeps its green leaves all year round and adorns the balcony with small flowers in shades of purple, pink, or white from April to August.

For those who prefer more intense colours, wintergreen is recommended. This evergreen shrub changes its colour from dark green to purple in cooler months, and in summer, it blooms with white, fragrant flowers. Wintergreen grows well both in the sun and in the shade, making it a versatile balcony plant.

Recommended plants for the balcony

Besides year-round plants, small trees and climbers are also recommended for balconies. Among them:

  • Jade plant, also known as the money tree, is one of the most popular balcony plants. It is easy to care for and doesn't require frequent watering, making it an ideal choice for busy people.
  • Boxwood also works well on balconies. Its evergreen leaves add elegance and style, and the ability to shape it into various forms makes it an attractive decorative element.
  • Clematis is one of the most spectacular balcony climbers. Its flowers can have various colours and shapes, allowing for unique compositions.
  • Petunias are delightful because of their lush blooming and variety of colours. They are easy to care for and bloom until frost, making them an excellent choice for a balcony.
