Berlin's A100 bridge dismantling triggers significant traffic turmoil

The bridge on Berlin's A100 road is set to be dismantled, leading to significant disruptions in the German capital's car and rail traffic until the end of April. Despite budgetary constraints, central authorities will allocate approximately 130 million pounds for this project.

According to the rbb24.de service, the Ringbahn bridge on Berlin's A100 road will be dismantled rather than undergoing further repairs. The work is expected to be completed by 25 April 2025. "We have opted for a quicker solution," said Dirk Brandenburger, the technical director of Autobahn GmbH, the organisation carrying out the work.

Rynekinfrastruktury.pl highlights that these are not the only infrastructure challenges in Berlin. The demolition of the Westendbrücke bridge, situated between the Kaiserdamm and Spandauer Damm junctions, is also necessary.

Berlin: Bridge demolition, major disruptions in the capital

Once the demolition is complete, rail traffic between Halensee and Westend stations will resume. Currently, the urban rapid transit railway (S-Bahn) is inoperative in the area, and car traffic has faced significant restrictions.

Transport Minister Volker Wissing emphasized the urgent need to replace the railway bridge along Berlin’s A100 motorway, calling for prompt action from the authorities in Berlin. He noted that the concerns of residents must be taken seriously and that relieving the strain on nearby neighborhoods is a priority. To achieve this, every possible step to speed up the planning and construction phases is being taken. In coordination with the Federal Ministry of Finance, Wissing confirmed that approximately 130 million pounds are being made available immediately for the new bridge, despite the constraints of a provisional budget.

Ronald Normann from Autobahn GmbH explained that the demolition will be conducted using conventional methods, without blowing up the structure. This approach aims to minimise risks to nearby buildings. The plan involves securing the Ringbahn tracks before proceeding with the bridge's demolition.

The closure of the A100 bridge is impacting residents' daily lives. Approximately 50,000 people use the currently closed section of the urban rapid transit railway daily, and car traffic is being redirected, leading to traffic congestion.
