Cheese on toast with melted cheese is one of the easiest dishes to prepare in just a few moments. While it may not represent gourmet cuisine, the combination of crispy bread and melted cheese is irresistibly enticing. Culinary experts point out that adding one ingredient can significantly enhance this dish's flavour.

Worcestershire sauce - the secret to flavour

Adding Worcestershire sauce to cheese on toast enriches its flavour. This sauce, based on vinegar and enriched with anchovies, molasses, tamarind paste, garlic, onion, sugar, salt, and spices, imparts a slightly sweet and tangy taste that complements cheese perfectly.

Experts from "The Kitchn" recommend that the cheese on the toast be grated, not sliced, to prevent the sauce from running off. Tara Holland, a recipe tester from "The Kitchn," notes:

This three-ingredient sandwich alternative is not only quick and easy to make, but also it's gooey, flavorful, and comforting all in one hit

How to best use Worcestershire sauce?

Holland suggests mixing the grated cheese with Worcestershire sauce before placing it on the bread to avoid washing the bowl twice.

Some don’t add any sauce before broiling, but I always add before and after – says Tara Holland.

The culinary site "Tasting Table" adds that Worcestershire sauce pairs best with various creamy cheeses and works well with sharp cheddar or rich-tasting Gruyère cheese. Thicker, crunchy bread will better support the weight of melted cheese and more effectively absorb the sauce.
