What do you need to know?

  • Where and when? The Strombolian activity of Etna is concentrated in the southeastern crater, with observations noted from 11 April 2025.
  • Why is it important? If activity increases, the volcanic cloud could drift southeastward, potentially affecting local flights.
  • What are the forecasts? Although the volcanic tremor has decreased, it remains high, and there has been an increase in infrasonic activity.

What are the current conditions at Etna?

According to the latest data from the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Catania, Etna is exhibiting moderate Strombolian activity, reported the ANSA agency. Ash emissions from the southeastern crater are being monitored, and in the event of increased activity, the volcanic cloud could travel southeastward.

Are flights at risk?

Despite the activity of the volcano, the Vincenzo Bellini International Airport in Catania remains operational. The alert for flights is at an orange level, indicating that the situation is under control but requires ongoing monitoring, the agency states.

What are the forecasts for the future?

Although the level of volcanic tremor has begun to fall, it remains high. There has been an increase in infrasonic activity, suggesting the possibility of further changes in the volcano's behaviour. However, observations have not indicated significant changes in ground deformation.
