Eurovision 2025's flag ban ignites global controversy

The organisers of Eurovision 2025 have introduced new regulations concerning the use of flags during the contest in Basel. The decision has sparked considerable controversy among the LGBT+ community, but they are not the only group who may feel affected.

Artists participating in Eurovision 2025, including Justyna Steczkowska, will arrive in Basel, Switzerland, in a few days to begin rehearsals. They must bear in mind the new rules regarding flags.

According to the Danish TV station DR, singers, particularly during the ceremonial parade at the beginning of the show, will not be allowed to use any flag other than their own country's flag. This ban includes, among others, the blue and gold European Union flag, the rainbow flag symbolising support for LGBT+ people, and the Palestinian flag.

Fans of the contest speculate that this decision relates to incidents from previous editions. As recently as last year, the participation of Israel, which conflicts with Palestine, caused a stir. Some participants, in a gesture of solidarity with Palestine, brought its flag with them — this occurred in both 2024 and 2019, when the show was held in the Middle East.

There have also been instances where artists, in addition to displaying their country’s flag, expressed sympathy for their second homeland or showed allegiance to a minority group. This will not be allowed in May.

The controversial ban will not apply to the audience. Unlike the previous year, spectators at the venue will be able to choose which flags to bring. They must merely adhere to Swiss legal regulations, which prohibit symbols associated with terrorist, political, and violent organisations.

Will the controversial ban at Eurovision 2025 be effective?

The decision by the Eurovision 2025 organisers has not been met with understanding. Fans of the show have warned that if their representatives feel the need to display a banned flag, they will find ways to do so, such as by smuggling it in their shoes.

Such actions are likely to result in a financial penalty for the national broadcaster.
