Flaxseed consists of tiny brown seeds with many benefits despite their unimposing appearance. They are particularly valued by women over fifty because they help relieve menopausal symptoms. They contain lignans, plant estrogens, and omega-3 fatty acids with anti-inflammatory effects. However, that's not the end of their beneficial properties.

What flaxseed contains

Flaxseed is also a rich source of fibre, which supports the digestive system, lowers cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and provides a long-lasting feeling of fullness. The omega-3 fatty acids present in flaxseed are essential for the proper functioning of the body, affecting brain and circulatory system function, and reducing the risk of heart diseases and cancers. Flaxseed also contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc, which support health on many levels.

Flaxseed in the diet

Flaxseed is easy to incorporate into your diet. It can be consumed raw, brewed, whole, or ground. Each method has its benefits. We best absorb the seeds when they are ground, and grinding should be done right before consumption because the fats in the seeds evaporate quickly. Ground flaxseed is best consumed raw by adding it to salads, sandwiches, or smoothies. It can also be used in cakes, muffins, and bread. It also works well as a thickener, for example, in meat patties.

Another popular way to use these seeds is to prepare a gruel from them. Pour water over them at room temperature. In this case, they do not need to be crushed, as the mucilage from the outer layer of the flaxseed quickly passes into the water. It's worth drinking the gruel and the seeds, which should be chewed well to absorb as many nutrients as possible.

When to consume flaxseed?

Flaxseed can be consumed both in the morning and evening, as its beneficial effects on the body do not depend on the time of day. However, in some cases, it's worth considering the timing. Morning doses of flaxseed are recommended for stomach ailments such as heartburn, hyperacidity, or stomach pain. Moreover, flaxseed infusions or jelly can even be consumed on an empty stomach. They will then have a protective effect on the stomach lining and support the digestive system.

In contrast, in the evening, flaxseed can help with nighttime snacking problems and support digestion. Flax seeds contain tryptophan, which is essential for healthy sleep.

Important!

When starting a regimen with flaxseed, it's best not to overdo the amount - start with one tablespoon a day, soaked in warm water, and gradually increase the amount to 2-3 tablespoons per glass of water.
