Mcdonald's launches Minecraft Movie meal with cheesy twist
Starting on 4th April, film about the iconic game Minecraft will be available to watch in cinemas. McDonald's restaurants are joining in on the promotion, enticing fans of resource exploration with the Minecraft Movie meal. Inside, there are two versions to construct, along with the option to expand the meal with a dessert featuring popping sprinkles.
A colleague from the editorial office succumbed to her son's pleas, a devoted fan of the game. They opted for a meal featuring Cheese Coins, which are round cheese bites in a golden breadcrumb coating. Classic nuggets were also an option. They ordered the expanded version with a McFlurry, topped with blocky cocoa sprinkles and white chocolate candies, which according to the promotion, were supposed to pop like TNT.
Minecraft Movie meal – What's in the box?
For a young Minecraft enthusiast, the contents of the box proved to be less significant. Inside were the mentioned cheese coins, fries, a drink, Nether Flame sauce, and a McFlurry with colourful sprinkles. However, it wasn't the food but the square box reflecting the game's main theme that received the most admiration.
The fries ordered for delivery weren't as tasty as eating them in the restaurant, which is understandable. In the cheese coins, the dominant flavour was the coating, and in texture, they resembled meat nuggets. The cheese flavour only became noticeable after a moment. Perhaps purchased on-site, provided the inside was actually soft and gooey, they would deliver a far more enjoyable experience.
After tasting, it was time to contemplate the calorie chart. The choice with cheese coins turned out to be far more calorie-dense than the nuggets version. Six cheese bites in coating sum up to 468 kcal, nearly as much as a Big Mac (544 kcal). The equivalent number of nuggets only provides 262 kcal, but are they worth it?
The composition of Nether Flame sauce raises concerns
The young Minecraft fan didn't even look at the spicy sauce included in the meal – possibly, this addition is aimed at slightly older consumers. Perhaps it's just as well – aside from its very fitting name, there is nothing noteworthy inside.
The ingredients of the sauce list water, distilled vinegar, and sugar as the primary components. This is followed by apricot purée and chilli pepper. The entire sauce has a sweet and spicy taste, quite similar to sauces in Chinese cuisine. Classic ketchup worked better with the cheese coins and fries.
Popping sprinkles might be a hit
The dessert, which is an optional addition to the Minecraft Movie meal, performed much better. Although, the actual appearance of the blocky sprinkles was less appealing than in the photos, but indeed – white chocolate-coated candies pop like TNT. Such additions are known to appeal to children's tastes. Therefore, I believe that even if the basic meal isn't a major success, queues might form for the McFlurry with sprinkles.
How much for the Minecraft Movie meal at McDonald's?
For the basic meal on-site – with cheese coins or nuggets to choose from – you'll pay approximately £4.80. In the enlarged version with a McFlurry and sprinkles, the price rises to roughly £6.10. For delivery options, you'll need to add about £0.60 to each of these choices. People who order the meal through the app with a promo code have a chance to win gadgets or boxes with collectible figures inside.
