An audacious prison break occurred in New Orleans on 16th May. Ten prisoners used damaged cell doors to make their way out. They then climbed over the barbed wire fence, vanishing under the cover of night. Their absence was only detected during the morning headcount.
The Louisiana state police reported the capture of three of the ten escapees. One was apprehended in Baton Rouge, while two others were captured in Walker County, Texas. The remaining prisoners are still at large.
According to officials quoted by CNN, the escape was meticulously planned. The increasing number of arrests of individuals suspected of involvement suggests the operation's complexity. Investigators are examining prison communications, including phone call recordings. They do not rule out that further charges may be brought against additional individuals during the investigation.
Statement from the Attorney General
The Attorney General of Louisiana, Liz Murrill, has assured that all those responsible for the escape will be held accountable.
In her statement, she emphasized that, as promised at the start of the investigation, every individual who played a role in the prison escape in New Orleans will be held accountable.
Investigators continue to analyse evidence, and further charges against other prisoners or prison staff are possible. The investigation also includes attempts to cover up the incident in the initial hours following the escape.
