  • Russia and the United States are discussing the possibility of restoring natural gas supplies to Europe via the Nord Stream pipelines.
  • Among the opponents of restoring the pipelines' operations are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Economy Minister Robert Habeck.
  • Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which run through the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, were damaged in September 2022 due to explosions.

Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, in a conversation with Russia's Channel One Television, expressed hope that the USA might use its influence on Europe to ensure it does not abandon Russian gas.

"Now, of course, there are disagreements. But is it only in the interests of Russia and the United States to restore normal energy supply to Europe? The Nord Stream pipelines are being discussed," said Lavrov.

Lavrov assessed that the scenario in which Russia restores gas supplies to Europe under U.S. influence is "surreal."

Lavrov condemns von der Leyen. "Unwell"

He noted that among those opposing the resumption of the pipelines' operations are European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Economy Minister Robert Habeck.

"They all say that they will never allow the restoration of Nord Stream. These people are either [mentally] unwell or suicidal," he said.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which run through the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, were damaged in September 2022 due to explosions. According to German investigators, Ukrainian special services are responsible for the sabotage.
