SC Freiburg honours late BVB legend with posthumous interview
The German football club SC Freiburg surprised fans by publishing an interview with BVB legend Wolfgang de Beer, who passed away in December 2024.
During their last match against Borussia Dortmund, SC Freiburg published an interview with Wolfgang de Beer.
The interview was published in the Saturday stadium magazine and on the club's website. It is surprising because the former goalkeeper and BVB goalkeepers' coach died on 30th December 2024, at the age of 60, and the interview was published 97 days after his death.
The club explained its actions in a special statement. "By publishing this many weeks later, the editorial team wanted to remind many fans once again of his Borussia Dortmund during their first visit since the death of the BVB legend, as well as what a great person he was."
It was added that the interview was conducted "shortly before" De Beer's death. In the interview, De Beer talked about his time in Dortmund and matches against SC Freiburg.
A sudden death of a legend
During his senior career, Wolfgang de Beer represented the colours of two clubs. He played the longest at Borussia Dortmund, where, after retiring, he served as a goalkeepers' coach until 2018. The German, who would have turned 61 years old on Thursday (2nd January), died "suddenly and unexpectedly on 30 December 2024," as highlighted by the German station Sky.
From 2001 to 2018, he was the aforementioned goalkeepers' coach, and it was thanks to him that the legendary Roman Weidenfeller joined the team. Lately, he was serving as a fan representative.
