Swedish royal scandal: Aristocrat caught with illegal drugs
A member of the Swedish royal family has been detained for drug possession. A close relative of King Carl XVI Gustaf was reportedly "caught red-handed." The scandalous details have been covered by the newspaper Expressen.
The Swedish newspaper accessed police information regarding an incident at a nightclub in Stockholm in April this year. An aristocrat and member of the royal family was present.
According to Expressen, he aroused the officers' suspicions with his unusual behaviour. He was detained and taken for questioning. At the police station, another incident occurred — the man "started losing control."
The questioning was halted and continued only in a more secure room. The member of King Carl XVI Gustaf's family admitted to possessing illegal substances. It was 0.02 ounces of cocaine, which he had hidden in a tobacco tin. He claimed he got it from a friend.
He was caught red-handed. He will have to answer for his actions, but he is not expected to receive a harsh penalty. Due to the small amount and it likely being his first offence, he should receive a warning or a fine — comments Expressen.
Details of the proceedings have not been disclosed. So far, no comment has been made by the spokesperson for the Swedish royal family. However, this is not the first time controversies surrounding the monarchy have provoked negative emotions among Swedes.
A compromising biography of the King of Sweden. An affair is not everything
In 2010, Thomas Sjöberg wrote a book titled Carl XVI Gustaf — a Monarch Against His Will, in which he revealed troubling events from the king's private life. In the 1990s, he was allegedly involved in an affair with pop singer Camilla Henemark.
Furthermore, witnesses were cited who saw him in an illegal club, "Club Power," in the Swedish capital, where, as the author claims, he allegedly relaxed in a jacuzzi with scantily clad women and engaged in gambling.
The person involved did not directly deny these claims. At a press conference, he stated that he intends to move on from them and prefers to focus on the future. He added at that time that he would not sue the author of the publication.
