President Donald Trump, in his post on the social media platform Truth Social, emphasised the role of the United States in both world wars. "We did more than any other Country, by far, in producing a victorious result on World War II," Trump stated.

In connection with this, he announced new holidays: 8 May as Victory Day in the Second World War and 11 November as Victory Day in the First World War.

"We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything — That’s because we don’t have leaders anymore, that know how to do so! We are going to start celebrating our victories again!" he added.

Medvedev criticises Trump

Dmitry Medvedev, former President of Russia and current deputy chairman of the Security Council, criticised Trump's statements. In a post on the social media platform VK, he described them as "pretentious nonsense". "Trump recently stated that the United States made the greatest contribution to the victory in World War II and that he will introduce a special holiday on May 8. The holiday is not a bad thing, but his first statement is pretentious nonsense," Medvedev wrote.

"Our people sacrificed 27 million lives of their sons and daughters in the name of destroying damned fascism. That is why Victory Day is ours, and it is on May 9th! That is how it was, that is how it is, and that is how it will always be!" he added.
