What do you need to know?

  • New sanctions: US officials have developed sanctions against Russia, which are set to cover the energy and banking sectors. The aim is to compel Russia to end the war in Ukraine.
  • Decision uncertainty: It is unclear whether President Trump will approve the new restrictions, despite previous threats against Russia.
  • Political pressure: There is strong support in Congress for imposing new sanctions, but the bill has not yet been brought to a vote.

Gazprom and other major entities are reportedly among the possible targets of the new restrictions. According to Reuters, the purpose of the sanctions would be to pressure Russia into making concessions and agreeing to the American ceasefire proposal.

Although sanctions are being prepared, it remains unclear whether President Trump will ultimately approve them. In recent weeks, he has issued multiple threats to impose measures against Russia—particularly targeting the energy and banking sectors—but has yet to follow through, the agency notes.

Will Trump strike Russia? Congress is "in favour"

There is widespread support in Congress for imposing new sanctions on Russia. More than 60 out of 100 senators have already supported the next round of restrictions. Nevertheless, it has not yet been brought to a vote.
