Trump touts progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks
Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine. Donald Trump was asked about this during a press conference. "Well, he is in a war (...). Nobody said he is going to stop," replied the US president.
The US president, Donald Trump, shared information on Monday about his phone call with Vladimir Putin. Trump stated that some progress towards peace had been made.
"Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations on a ceasefire and, more importantly, the end of the war. The terms of this will be negotiated between both parties," he indicated.
A question was asked about Putin's attacks. Trump responded
At the press conference, a journalist pointed out that Trump believes Putin wants peace, yet Russia attacked Ukraine yesterday.
"Well, he is in a state of war. They are fighting, attacking each other. And people are dying all the time. He is at war, fighting. Nobody said that he is gonna to stop," replied Trump.
"Is it terrible? Yes, it is terrible. I think it's terrible," he added.
Putin made a statement
Russian leader Vladimir Putin said that he had a phone conversation with Donald Trump, which lasted two hours. "It was sincere and substantive," he added. He emphasized that issues of ceasefire and principles for resolving the conflict could be included in a memorandum between Russia and Ukraine.
The leader stated that "Russia is ready to cooperate with Kiev regarding a memorandum on the future peace treaty." Putin conveyed that the US president "expressed his position on the ceasefire in the war with Ukraine."
