Trump's nuclear power play: New twist in Ukraine talks
Donald Trump has adopted a new approach in negotiations with Ukraine. This time, the American politician proposed to the government in Kyiv that they take over Ukrainian nuclear power stations. Volodymyr Zelensky has not entirely dismissed Trump's proposal, although he emphasised that discussions were limited to the plant in Zaporizhzhia, which is currently under Russian control.
The aim of Donald Trump is to initiate peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. The former American president also seeks to gain advantages for the United States. The politician has been setting additional conditions and proposals for Ukraine. On this occasion, Volodymyr Zelensky discussed nuclear power stations with Trump.
The proposal involves Americans assuming control of Ukrainian nuclear power stations, which - according to Donald Trump - would be "the best protection for that infrastructure and support for Ukrainian energy infrastructure."
Volodymyr Zelensky is not outright rejecting the U.S. president's proposal. However, the Ukrainian leader emphasised that, for now, only the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been discussed with Donald Trump. This facility is currently under Russian control.
Trump satisfied with talks with Ukraine and Russia
Donald Trump stated that the one-hour phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky was "very good." This took place a day after consultations with Vladimir Putin, conducted by phone, to negotiate a 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.
BBC reports that Volodymyr Zelensky stated after the conversation that lasting peace can be achieved this year under Trump's leadership. However, Putin continues to impose impossible conditions on Ukraine and the United States. The Russian leader rejected proposals for a complete ceasefire.
