  • When did the project start? Officially launched in February 2025, the project is the result of earlier concepts developed since 2023.

What are the goals of the "Drone Line"?

The "Drone Line" project was initiated to strengthen Ukraine's defence against enemy advances. The initiative focuses on using drones to monitor and attack the enemy on various front sections. The Ukrainian military aims to createstable defence on key sections such as Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk. "This strategy aims to create a destruction zone within a radius of 10-15 kilometres, effectively preventing enemy movements without losses," emphasised Defence Minister Rustem Umerov, highlighting that the project will provide air support and protection to the infantry.

Why is the "Drone Line" crucial for Ukraine?

The project responds to the need for a modern defence strategy that utilises advanced technologies. The "Drone Line" aims not only to stop the enemy but also to strengthen the position of the Ukrainian armed forces through better use of unmanned aerial vehicles. "Our task is not to reinvent the wheel, but to allow the best units to become even better," explains one of the project participants.

What are the challenges and future of the project?

The new defence-building technique is also expected to assist Ukrainian troops in other ways. They will be able to fight from pre-prepared positions without moving to different areas on the front line. As explained in an interview with the Ukrainian portal pravda.com by the commander of the Achilles unit, Yuriy Fedorenko, according to the new strategy, Ukrainian soldiers will be able to better study the enemy and systematically inflict fire damage on them.
