Unprecedented drone assault hits Moscow ahead of peace talks
Air defence systems intercepted and shot down 337 Ukrainian drones overnight. This was declared the most significant attack of the year 2025, as announced by the Russian Ministry of Defence. Nearly 100 drones targeted the Moscow region alone.
Many of the reports from Russian media or authorities may be elements of propaganda. Such reports are part of the information warfare conducted by the Russian Federation.
A total of 337 drones from the Ukrainian Armed Forces were destroyed and intercepted by air defence systems on the night of 10th to 11th March, according to the Russian Ministry of Defence.
Massive attack on Russia
According to the Ministry of Defence:
- 91 drones were shot down over the Moscow region,
- 126 over the Kursk region,
- 38 over the Bryansk region,
- 25 over the Belgorod region, and
- 22 over the Ryazan region.
Additionally, several drones were intercepted over the Kaluga, Lipetsk, Oryol, Voronezh, and Nizhny Novgorod regions.
The most significant damage was reported in the Moscow region, where drones struck residential buildings, a car park, and a railway line.
Dozens of explosions in Moscow
Owing to the drone attack, Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo airports near Moscow are currently non-operational.
The Russian capital was also targeted. According to Reuters, this may have been the most significant Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow to date.
The governor of the Moscow region, Andrey Vorobyov, stated that at least one person was killed and three others were injured in the extensive attack.
Information about the attack emerged just hours before a planned meeting on Tuesday in Saudi Arabia, where Ukrainian and American delegations are set to discuss measures to end the war.
