Dramatic jump over the Zambezi
Erin Langworthy, a young tourist from Australia, was in Zambia when she decided to embark on an unforgettable adventure — bungee jumping from a bridge over the Zambezi River, on the border with Zimbabwe. What was supposed to be an exhilarating experience turned into a terrifying ordeal when the bungee cord snapped during the jump, and Erin plummeted from approximately 360 feet into the treacherous, crocodile-infested waters.
As reported by the "Daily Mail", after the fall, Erin was carried away by the river's strong current. Despite suffering serious injuries, including internal ones, she managed to stay afloat and evade an attack by wild animals. Her confrontation with the elements was captured on video, which quickly went viral on social media.
Ill-fated bungee jump
Staff from the company organising the jumps came to her aid, rescuing her from the water and transporting her to the hospital in Victoria Falls, on the Zimbabwean side. Doctors diagnosed her with, among other injuries, partially collapsed lungs and a risk of infection, due to swallowing contaminated river water.
In later interviews, Langworthy described the traumatic aftermath of the accident, recalling the bruising, fluid and blood in her lungs, and a deep sense of exhaustion. Her most significant concern, she revealed to The Guardian, was the possibility of internal injuries.
The company responsible for organising the jumps visited Erin in the hospital and issued an official apology. Although Langworthy recovered, she admitted that she does not intend to undertake similar risky challenges in the future. Her story has become a cautionary tale for all extreme sports enthusiasts — even the most professionally prepared activities can entail unpredictable risks.
